On Sunday 7 February, the New Victoria Theatre in Woking was bursting with song as hundreds of enthusiastic singers took part in the `Woking Sing's concert in aid of the Mayor's charities. Conductor and comedian Rainer Hersch, led the audience through an entertaining evening of songs from a variety of different groups, some of whom were accompanied by a professional orchestra.
The concert featured lively pieces such as `Hallelujah Chorus' and `Anvil Chorus' performed by the community `Giant Choir' in the auditorium, and led by the `Lead Choir' on stage comprising of members of four choirs in Woking. The second half featured enthusiastic young singers from five primary schools in Woking who wowed the audience with the lively song `Sunshine in my heart'. For many of the children this was their first time on a big theatre stage. Surrey Youth Choir's performance displayed their versatility and superb talents in the Nigerian `Highlife' Song `O-re-mi'. An entertaining performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's `Modern Major General' featured the magnificent vocal talent of baritone soloist Ben Davies, who performed with great character and humour. To end the concert, the whole theatre rose to their feet to sing a very rousing `Land of Hope and Glory'.
The Woking Sings concert was a great success with over 700 people from the local community taking part and raised in excess £800 for the Mayor's charities: Link Leisure, Woking branch of the Alzheimer's Society and Woking Community Action Fund. Choir participants commented the concert was `excellent - loved it!' and the Mayor of Woking Cllr Tina Liddington said "my guests and I thoroughly enjoyed Woking Sings. Rainer Hersch, who compered the concert, captured the audience with his quick wit and comedy approach, encouraged the audience to get involved and participate." One of the Mayor's guests who attended the concert, The High Sherriff of Surrey commented "it was a very successful occasion in every regard and we were delighted to support it".
