Farmers' market rules

WOKING FARMERS' MARKET

General Information

Woking Farmers' Markets were established to give local farmers and producers a new opportunity to sell their produce direct to the public and to give consumers the chance to buy fresh, locally grown fruit and vegetables, locally grown meat and home made products. The Markets will introduce a new awareness of local foods benefiting producers and consumers alike.

Criteria

  1. The producer named in the application must have grown, raised baked or caught all produce to be sold. Producers may not sell products or produce on behalf of, or bought from any other farm or supplier.

  2. Violation of the `producer only' rule will result in exclusion from the Market.

  3. The term `producer' includes the applicant's family and employees when they are directly involved in the business.

Market Regulations

  1. Produce and products offered for sale should normally be produced within 30 miles of the Farmers Market. Where producers for certain products can not be found within this area, producers from a maximum of no more than 100 miles may be allowed to sell at the Farmers Market

  2. The Market will be open to the public from 9.00 am to 2.30pm (stallholders to arrive by 8.00 am). Stalls must not be cleared away before 2.30pm without prior agreement of the Market Manager.

  3. A fee of £34.00 per stall per day will be charged for the Thursday market, and £39.00 per stall per day for the Saturday market. This fee must be paid before the date of the Market.

  4. An area of the car park will be set aside for producers to park a vehicle once they have unloaded their produce.

  5. No GM produce or produce containing GM ingredients may be sold at the Market.

  6. If applicants are received from several producers offering the same or similar goods at the Market priority will be given to the more local producers. The Council's decision will be final regarding which applicants take part. Producers excluded because of this rule will be offered an alternative date for participation wherever possible.

  7. The producer is responsible for complying with all local and national laws and regulations regarding the production, labeling, display, storage and sale of goods. All producers should comply with the Food Safety (General Food Hygiene) Regulations 1995, the Food Safety (Temperature Control) Regulations 1995 and the Food Safety Act 1990. Photocopies of your Public Liability insurance certificate must accompany your application.

  8. Producers should display trading names clearly on their stalls, together with a contact address.

  9. Goods should contain at least 10% local ingredients also cakes and other processed items should not be from commercial mixes but use fresh local ingredients wherever possible from within the defined local area.

  10. Sellers of alcohol must possess a personal licence. Or the council can apply for a licence as long as more than ten days notice is given prior to the market they wish to attend.

  11. Producers must dispose of all rubbish in the bags provided.

Market Stalls

  • Producers should bring their own chillers or refrigerators if required and subject to prior agreement.

  • The Council's decisions on all the above rules and all other matters concerning the market are final and binding.
