Trees growing in council tenants' gardens and on housing amenity land

The Council cares for around 3,500 trees on land managed by its Tenant and Leaseholder Services in partnership with Serco.

It is the Council's policy for the care and maintenance of trees in tenants' gardens to:

  • inspect the condition and safety of trees on a five year programme
  • prune or remove trees only where it is required for the health and safety of the tree, or a tree is causing a danger to life or property
  • prioritise work to trees, and carry out work on a basis of urgency and cost-effectiveness and
  • carry out work to dangerous trees within 48 hours of inspection.

It is not the Council's policy to:

  • fell trees because they are casting shade over a house or garden, or causing inconvenience by dropping leaves or blossom or
  • grind out tree stumps in gardens.
