Refuse on private landEnvironmental Health will investigate reports of refuse accumulations on private land and take steps to try to arrange clearance by the owner or owners of the land.
If the accumulation is one which would provide food or nesting space for rats or mice, or anything which would cause an odour nuisance or present a bad health risk for humans, a legal notice may be served on the owner or owners of the land requiring that the accumulation of refuse be cleared.
If the legal notice is not complied with, the Council may arrange for the work to be carried out. If this happens the person(s) responsible for the land would be charged for the cost of the work and they may also be prosecuted for their failure to comply with the legal notice.
"Illegal deposit of any waste onto land, i.e. waste tipped or dumped on a site with no licence to accept waste."
It includes anything from general household waste (e.g. fridges, sofas, mattresses and garden waste) to commercial and industrial waste (e.g. waste soils, clinical waste, rubble, tyres).
The Environment Agency investigates complaints of fly-tipping. In an emergency only, where there is a threat of pollution, please call the HOTLINE 0800 807060. For routine reports of fly-tipping call 0870 8506506.
The Council also provides a household waste collection and kerbside recycling service. Comments or complaints relating to missed refuse collections should be directed to Customer Services.
