Members, staff and volunteers of Moorcroft Centre for the Community in Westfield raised a glass of bubbly at their `Showtime' themed party yesterday (Thursday 26 September 2013), as they celebrated the Centre's 21st birthday.
Special guests, including Mrs Joyce Osborne and Mrs Pat Berry, both founding volunteers of Moorcroft who continue to offer their services to this day, and Mrs Joyce Strudwick, an original staff member who later went on to become manager, joined the Mayor of Woking, Cllr Anne Roberts, to celebrate with the many staff and volunteers past and present who have helped make Moorcroft the success it is today.
Guests enjoyed a mouth-watering three-course meal, followed by live entertainment by musician Paul Lambourne, featuring songs by Frank Sinatra and other Rat Pack icons, to continue the showtime theme.
Built in 1884 as a school house, the building was converted for community use in 1992 when it had almost become derelict. Renovated and refurbished, the building was renamed `Moorcroft Centre for the Community' and officially opened in 1993 by the then Mayor of Woking, Cllr Lesley Pescodd. Since then, the Centre has become a hub for social, educational, health, general community and recreational events and activities.
Cllr Anne Roberts, Mayor of Woking, said: "This is a very special day for everyone involved with Moorcroft Centre for the Community. We are all extremely proud of the services it offers to the local community and we look forward to welcoming many more visitors over the coming years. Without the army of volunteers and staff who have dedicated their time in supporting Moorcroft over the last 21 years, we would not have achieved the wonderful centre we have today."
