It is with sadness that Woking Borough Council today (Tuesday 12 February) announces the death of former Chairman of Woking Urban District Council and ex-Conservative councillor, Mrs Margaret Marshall, who passed away over the weekend. As a mark of respect, the Borough flag will be flown at half-mast.
Mrs Marshall served as Chairman of Woking Urban District Council from 1970 to 1971 and as Ward Councillor for Byfleet for nine years. Elected in 1965, she took an active role in the day-to-day running of the Urban District Council, serving on many committees, including Health and Housing, Selection, Education and Local Government Reorganisation.
Mrs Marshall also served as a County Councillor, representing Woking East from 1967 to 1981.
After moving to Runnymede, Mrs Marshall continued her keen interest in local politics, becoming a Ward Councillor at Runnymede Borough Council from 1983 to 1995. She also served as Mayor of Runnymede between 1991 and 1992.
On hearing of the news, Cllr Michael Smith, Mayor of Woking, said: "I was saddened to learn of the passing of Biddy Marshall, as she was affectionately known. I got to know Biddy well whilst I lived in Pyrford. She was a County Councillor for many years and chaired the Education Committee during the difficult years when Grammar schools were directed to close by the then Government. On behalf of the Borough Council, I would like to pass on our condolences to Biddy's family. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her."
The funeral service will be held at 2.45pm, Tuesday 19 February at Woking Crematorium. The family have requested family flowers only.
