Each year, Fairtrade Fortnight provides a national opportunity for communities to support Fairtrade. This year's fortnight begins on Monday 22 February and runs until Sunday 7 March 2010.
Woking Fairtrade Action Network have organised a number of exciting events, in partnership with other Fairtrade groups in Surrey. You can find out more at the group's web site, http://www.wokingfairtrade.org.uk.
Highlights include the Strictly Fairtrade Tea Dance, at University Hall, Surrey University Campus, Guildford on Saturday 27 February between 4pm and 8pm. This will be a fun event with a competitive element. The networkis organising it with the Guildford Fairtrade Group and are looking for teams from both Woking and Guildford to perform dances which will be judged.
The Woking Fairtrade Action Network aims to promote the use of Fairtrade products in Woking in order to help producers in so-called 'developing countries'. The Network's first aim was for Woking to be officially recognised as a Fairtrade Town. This was achieved in September 2005, with the support of Woking Borough Council.
A Fairtrade Town is one which has made a commitment to supporting Fairtrade, which is a way to support disadvantaged farmers and workers in developing countries. In practice, this means that local people recognise the Fairtrade Mark and understand that it guarantees that the goods they buy provide a better deal for the producers from the Third World. It also means that Fairtrade products are widely available in supermarkets, cafe and places of work.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
