A litterbug was fined £50 in Woking Town Centre on Friday 1 July, by the Council's Neighbourhood Officers and will now have 14 days grace to pay up.

The man, who was caught dropping a cigarette butt in the Town Square was stopped by Neighbourhood Officers who asked him to pick it up. When he refused to do so, they issued him with a £50 fixed penalty notice, which must be paid within 14 days or the man could face court proceedings.

Cllr Anne Murray Portfolio Holder for Refuse Collection said: "This is the first fine issued in Woking, as part of a six-month litter enforcement pilot scheme. This demonstrates that the Council will simply not tolerate litter dropping in the town centre and serves as a warning to others to be responsible for their rubbish."

Meanwhile, other Woking residents have been commended for their actions to keep Woking tidy. Neighbourhood Officers have been busy spotting people who do put rubbish in the bin, and have pulled a lucky winner's name from a hat.

Sylvia Griffiths, the proud winner, was presented with her £50 shopping voucher prize by Cllr Anne Murray and the Neighbourhood Officers' team on Monday 4 July at 12 noon at a special presentation outside the Civic Offices.
