Preparations for the first phase of the Borough-wide wheeled bin roll-out will move forward next week, when leaflets explaining how the scheme works will arrive on the doormats of around 11,000 homes.

The information will tell residents in West Byfleet, Byfleet, Pyrford, Woodham and parts of Goldsworth Park East, Horsell East and Maybury to expect their two new bins between 5 September 2005 and 23 September 2005. The leaflet will also outline what materials they should place in each bin.

Further information about the scheme will then be sent out shortly before the new system commences and residents will be invited to neighbourhood recycling roadshows where they can ask questions. The Council will also be providing local support via a wheeled bin implementation team, trained to visit homes and explain the changes, and help with any issues or enquiries.

Once the first phase of the roll-out is complete, the second phase will begin when approximately 14,000 bin deliveries will take place in Mount Hermon, Hermitage, Kingfield, Westfield, Mayford, Knaphill and parts of Brookwood, St Johns and Hook Heath. This is expected to be carried out between 24 October 2005 and 18 November 2005.

In the third and final phase, around 6,000 homes in the remainder of the Borough will receive their bins between 13 February 2006 and 3 March 2006. Residents in the second and third phase will receive similar information and support as those people in the first phase.

The decision to proceed with a Borough-wide roll-out of the twin-bin system follows a successful pilot scheme involving around 6,000 households. A survey sent to all participants in the scheme last year, revealed that 84% of residents wanted the system to continue and during this period, there was an increase in recycling rates in the pilot area from 19% to an estimated 41% inclusive of green waste collected. The aim of the new scheme is to help local residents recycle and cut down the amount of rubbish sent to landfill every week.

Cllr Anne Murray, Woking Borough Council's Portfolio Holder for Refuse Collection, said: "This new system will provide an effective way for residents to recycle direct from their home and help create a significant improvement in the Borough's recycling rates to meet the Government's target of 30% by 2005/6. (Woking's current performance for the whole Borough, including green waste, is 23.6% of waste recycled.) The Council will provide lots of information and support during the roll-out periods, so that residents are fully aware of the changes that are happening and can make a smooth transition from the old system to the new procedures."
