Young athletes from across the Borough proved themselves to be sporting super stars during the weekend of 21 and 22 June 2008 when they competed in the Surrey Youth Games and walked away with a clutch of medals and a trophy for second place.
All eleven Surrey boroughs took part in the county wide sporting spectacle which took part at The Varsity and The Spectrum in Guildford and Woking Leisure Centre. Approximately two hundred children, aged 7 to 15 years, represented Woking in eleven different sports including athletics, badminton, boccia, basketball, football, hockey, judo, netball, tag rugby, squash and swimming.
For many of the competitors, this was their first experience of competition on such a grand scale, but they rose to the challenge to scoop five gold, two silver and six bronze medals for Woking.

• GOLD – Athletics (Junior Mixed), Badminton (Senior Mixed), Basketball (Senior Boys), Football (Senior Girls), Judo (Senior Girls)
• SILVER – Football (Junior Girls), Swimming (Under 15 Mixed)
• BRONZE – Basketball (Senior Girls), Boccia (Disability Senior Mixed), Football (Disability Senior Boys), Swimming (Under 12 Mixed), Swimming (Under 13 Mixed), Swimming (Under 14 Mixed)

The performance of all the teams then contributed to the overall results and the final scores on the doors revealed that Woking was second place, just six points behind the overall winners, Spelthorne. A full list of results can be found at www.activesurrey.com
All of the Woking competitors had spent weeks training for free with qualified and experienced coaches in order to learn the skills and tactics needed to compete.
After having a taste of sporting action, it is now hoped that these children will go on to find local clubs to continue their interest and develop their skills.
Cllr Michael Smith, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Health and Well-being Development, said: “Our young people put in a fantastic performance to win second place at the Games and, on behalf of everyone at the Council, I would like to congratulate the athletes and the support team on a job well done. It’s great to see so many of our young people enjoying sport and I hope that they will now go on to develop their skills further.”
The Woking team is very grateful to their sponsors, Mansell, Kall Kwik, Go For It Teamwear and South West Trains for their support in preparing the young performers for the Games.
