Surrey Youth Games 2006

Surrey Youth Games 2006 Results and Report

TENTH ANNIVERSARY TWIST

Woking joined in the celebrations of the Surrey Youth Games tenth anniversary with a number of very impressive performances as over 200 Woking youngsters took part in the Olympic style competition.

All eleven Surrey boroughs took part in the county wide sporting spectacle which took part in Guildford on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 June. 200 children represented Woking in eleven different sports including athletics, badminton, boccia, basketball, football, hockey, judo, netball, rugby and tennis.

Building upon the impressive performances from the previous weekend's tennis competition many teams competed to some very high standards, with every single team member coming away from the competition having thoroughly enjoyed being part of such a large scale sporting event.

The result is the culmination of a lot of hard work and training not only from the children involved but also from the coaches and team manager's who are rightly very proud of the achievement of their respective teams. Woking are also very grateful to South West Trains and Kall Kwik for supporting the Woking team in preparing the young people for the Games.

The Surrey Youth Games is part of a much larger programme of activity for Surrey's young people, co-ordinated through the Active Surrey Sports Partnership. Speaking about Woking's performance at this year's event Borough Team Organiser, Peter Freeman said "The Games have provided a stepping stone to many young people to experience a new sport and take part in a large scale sporting competition. As a result of the training the intention is to link a lot of the young participants to many of the local sports clubs where they can continue their interest further."

The consistency of performance was a big feature in the overall Borough success with many of the teams finishing within the top three of their respective sport, winning four individual golds, four silvers and one bronze.

  • GOLD - Senior Athletics Girls Basketball, Girls Junior Judo, Boys Junior Judo.

  • SILVER - Disability Athletics, Boys Senior Judo, Tennis and Girls Rugby

  • BRONZE - Junior Mixed Hockey

The performance of all the teams contributed to Woking finishing as the overall winning borough, however unfortunately late withdrawals of two of the teams resulted in the Borough being penalised points and therefore dropping dramatically to joint ninth place. The penalty is unfortunate on all the participants who have competed so well this weekend, despite the disappointing finishing position, the Games have provided every child with an enjoyable sporting experience.

How to 'Join the Woking Team'

About the Games

The Surrey Youth Games have been developed with sports development in mind with participation as its fundamental principle. The Games began in 1997 and see each of the eleven Surrey Boroughs take a total of 220 young people to compete in the Games.

In the Games nine year history Woking have been crowned as overall champions a remarkable seven times which is due to the invaluable support of local schools, sports clubs and organisations and the voluntary support of coaches and teachers.
