This year's Sport Woking Awards were held on August 1 2008 at Woking Leisure Centre with special guest of honour, the legendary Woking, Surrey and England cricketer, Sir Alec Bedser.
Having handed over 11 awards ranging from Young Sports Personality to Club of the Year (details below) he was amazed to find that it was he himself who was awarded the ultimate accolade of The Trotman Trophy in recognition of his achievements for Surrey and England. Sir Alec was impressed with the range of award winners and spent time with them afterwards to find out more about their sports and clubs.
The award winners were presented with engraved glasses plus substantial vouchers and discount offers from the sponsors of the awards – ‘Side’, the sportswear suppliers based in Westfield, who supply team kits and equipment for almost all major sports, who were thanked for their generous support.
Two clubs featured strongly in the awards: the ever-developing Woking Blackhawks Basketball, and in particular the successful Ladies team, and The Woking and Maybury Sports Club. The later of which has grown in the last few years to 130 members, offering a range of sports: Football, Cricket, Swimming and Martial Arts to Boys and Girls, Men and Women. Predominantly based in the Maybury area, the club are an open and inclusive club formed by a dedicated team of sports lovers with a social mission as well – one of whom, universally known as ‘Rocky’, has run Cricket teams and charity competitions in the area for over 20 years.
This is the second year the awards have been extended to cover a wide range of categories – the winners of which now go forward to the Surrey Awards to be awarded in October this year. Commenting on this year’s results, Chair Clive Moon said, “Whilst a wide range of nominations was received, it is hoped in future that an even greater array of sporting achievers and contributors in the area will be put forward and recognised”.
