The Prime Minister´s recent announcement of £100m extra funding for sport and PE signals significant and exciting times ahead for all children and young people. This funding is in addition to the Government´s existing funding commitment to deliver the National PE, School Sport and Club Links strategy, which amounts to £633m over the next three years.
The overall aim is to ensure that by 2010 all 5-19 year olds will be able to access 2 hours high quality PE at school and a further 3 hours of varied, high quality sporting activities each week through out of school hours opportunities and community clubs. Quite a challenge!
In order to achieve this ambitious target, it is vital that schools and community clubs work more closely together, developing links which will provide quality outcomes for all young people.
With this in mind a meeting was held between Winston Churchill School (North West Surrey School Sports Partnership), Woking Borough Council and Surrey Heath Borough Council, School Sport Co-ordinators from all 9 state secondary schools and approximately 40 representatives of local clubs in a bid to establish how we in North West Surrey, can collectively work together to ensure local young people have access to the highest quality sporting opportunities both at school and in the community setting.
The aim of the meeting was to establish how relationships and formal school-club links can be built between clubs and primary and secondary schools in Woking and Surrey Heath over the coming months to provide further opportunities for all young people living and going to school in the two boroughs.
We are keen that this event is not a "one-off" but would like to ensure that it becomes a part of a clubs fixture calendar and occurs on an annual basis.
