London 2012 Games

Woking Borough Council is proud to be an official Host Borough for the London 2012 Games.

For one weekend in July 2012, the eyes of the world will be transfixed upon the undulating, green landscapes of Surrey and Woking as the world's top professional men and women cyclists battle it out for Olympic medals right on our doorstep.

The men's and women's Cycling Road Race events, taking place on the opening weekend of the Games (28 and 29 July 2012), are expected to attract over one million spectators along the unticketed route, providing huge economic opportunities for local businesses and viewing points for local residents and visitors.

This once in a lifetime event will provide tantalisingly up close opportunities to cheer on the crème de la crème of the world's professional cyclists.

Olympic Cycle Road Race route

The 250km route (men's race) and 140km (women's race), starting and finishing at The Mall in London, will run through five Surrey boroughs and pass through or near towns, including: Walton, Weybridge, Byfleet, West Byfleet, Pyrford, West Horsley, Gomshall, Dorking, Leatherhead, Oxshott, Esher, East and West Molesey, as well as lapping Box Hill a number of times.

Go Surrey - working in partnership

Woking Borough Council is working in partnership with the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG), Surrey County Council and neighbouring local authorities to deliver a world-class event, which will be remembered for years to come and leave a lasting legacy for the Borough.

London-Surrey Cycle Classic 2011

On Sunday 14 August 2011, as part of the London Prepares series of test events, Britain's top cyclist and Olympic hopeful Mark Cavendish clinched victory over more than 150 world-class riders at the London-Surrey Cycle Classic.

The dress rehearsal style event passed along the route of the London 2012 Cycling Road Race and allowed LOCOG to test crucial aspects of its operations less than one year ahead of the Games.

Celebrate Woking community events

In celebration of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, Woking Borough Council has set aside funding to deliver a year-long programme of free multi-cultural events and community projects, called Celebrate Woking, working in partnership with the Borough's residents, schools, businesses and community groups.

This exciting and inspirational programme of events and activities aims to bring communities together to celebrate and raise the profile of sport, art and green spaces throughout the Borough, whilst leaving a legacy that will remain beyond the 2012 Games.

Local volunteering opportunities

The application process to become a London 2012 Games Maker is closed and successful applicants have been informed.

Despite this, there are still plenty of ways to get involved locally. Celebrate Woking is looking for enthusiastic and friendly volunteers to help deliver this exciting year-long programme of events.

Celebrate Woking is offering a range of volunteer opportunities at the fast and furious Halfords Tour Series (12 June), the family-friendly Party in the Park event (7 July), and the action-packed West Byfleet LI:VE community events (27 to 29 July).

Whatever you are interested in, Woking Association of Voluntary Service (WAVS) will work with you to find the best option for you. Volunteers can be all walks of life: young, retired, employed, looking for work and from different ethnic backgrounds. No previous experience is needed, just an interested and enthusiastic approach. Full training will be provided.
