"Exercise on Prescription" GP and Physiotherapist Referral Scheme
The aim of Woking Leisure Centre´s `Wellness Club´ is to offer exercise on prescription for patients from hospitals, GP surgeries, and physiotherapists.
The Wellness Club aims to offer a holistic approach to patients providing them with opportunities to incorporate regular exercise into their lifestyles to alleviate the symptoms and health problems associated with inactivity. We hope to change participants exercise patterns and attitudes towards exercise.
Wellness is a state of optimal well-being that is oriented toward maximising your potential. This is a life-long process of moving towards enhancing your physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, and environmental well-being.
Wellness is all of these factors working together peacefully.
The Wellness Club is the result of a successful pilot scheme run for six months in late 1995 to early 1996. This scheme was an exclusive partnership between Woking Leisure Centre and Heathcott medical practice. Using the pilot schemes evaluation report for guidance as well as scheme outlines from other West Surrey `Exercise on Prescription´ programmes, our Wellness Club was developed.
To join the wellness club you first need to be referred by your GP, physio or consultant. If your practitioner is not linked with us please ask them to contact the centre so an information pack can be sent out.
After you have received your referral form it is important you book for an appointment as soon as possible. Your appointment will be split into two sessions.
The first session is an introduction with our referral consultant and goes through all the relevant paperwork and includes a discussion on your condition, previous exercise history and requirements.
The second part includes a tour of the gym equipment and a personal programme is written specifically for your requirements including any guidance from the GP or physiotherapist notes.
After the two-part induction you are then able to come into the gym when you wish. A swipe card which allows access through reception for a subsidised entry fee is issued which will last for three months. After three months a progress assessment is conducted free of charge to see how you are improving. If the assessment shows that you have recovered or achieved a good standard of health the subsidised sessions will cease and you can graduate to either a casual user participating in the gym on a "pay and play" basis or join one of our membership schemes.
