’10 photos’ book captures spirit of the community

Woking Borough Council’s Arts Development Officer, Hannah Smith, joined visual artist, Janetka Platun, and local people on Thursday 22 October, to celebrate the completion of a book entitled ’10 Photos’ from the ‘Creative Communities’ project.

Since January, artist-in-residence, Janetka, has been working with Lakeview residents and a range of community groups who use the social centre, in addition to the Salvation Army and pupils at Sythwood School, to explore the local area and use photography to convey how they feel about where they live. On 22 October, each participant was presented with a copy of the book of photographs to keep. Creative Communities was a county-wide programme of arts-led projects, which saw professional artists working with local people to help shape their ambitions. The year-long scheme has engaged seven artists with nine local communities, to encourage and help the participants to articulate their sense of self. Speaking about the project, Hannah Smith said: “Creative Communities has been very successful across Surrey and, in Woking, has encouraged some residents to take part in an arts project for the first time. The scheme will also leave a legacy for the community, as copies of the book will remain at Lakeview, and with the Salvation Army and Sythwood School, for other residents to enjoy.”For further information on the ’10 Photos’ book, please contact Hannah Smith, Woking Borough Council’s Arts Development Officer, on 01483 743072, or email hannah.smith@woking.gov.uk
