The Creative Communities project took place in Woking from early 2009, the first phase of which was a year-long artist-in-residence project with visual artist, Janetka Platun. Residents' explored ideas and thoughts about the Lakeview area through photography, which also encouraged some people to take part in an arts project for the first time. This project culminated in the '10 photos' book being published and copies are available from the Civic Offices.

A second phase of the project, took place with Janetka Platun during Spring 2010, entitled 'Bingo Portrait Series'. The project has worked with the 'Lift Up Together' group in Lakeview who meet each week and enjoy a range of activities including a regular bingo session. Along with the group participants, Jan has explored how each person's bingo ticket is unique and how each completed strip reveals a different personality, showing an alternative portrait of the group. The project culminated in a showcase of photographs on Arriva buses around Woking during May and June 2010.

Creative Communities was a county-wide programme of arts-led projects, where professional artists worked with local people to help shape their ambitions. The year-long scheme engaged seven artists with nine local communities, to encourage and help the participants to articulate their sense of self. Speaking about the project, Hannah Smith said: Creative Communities has been very successful across Surrey and, in Woking, has encouraged some residents to take part in an arts project for the first time. The scheme also left a legacy for the community, as copies of the book will remain at Lakeview, and with the Salvation Army and Sythwood School, for other residents to enjoy.
