Extra Care at Brockhill

Woking Borough Council and Surrey County Council have launched a new project to ensure all Brockhill tenants can remain living independently in their own homes. The aim is to promote and improve the ability of all tenants to live independently in their own accommodation, and to enjoy the social activities Brockhill has to offer.

Features include:

  • 24 hour personal and social care provided by on-site care team.
  • Joint working between housing and care staff to promote all aspects of independent living by:
  • enabling people to participate in social events
  • assist in daily living tasks
  • increase mobility
  • enable everyone to have a hot mid-day meal
  • access to bathing, chiropody and other health care needs.

Up to 20 tenancies at any one time can access the extra care element of Brockhill; each person receiving the individual personal care that he or she needs.

All tenants are able to access the emergency support that the care team can provide, such as providing emergency first aid and access to paramedics and GPs.

Housing staff provide an overall assessment of the person's needs through a  Support Plan which details all the elements required to promote independence. Extra Care tenants will also have a Care Plan which gives the level of daily personal care they need to promote and sustain independent living.

Brockhill Housing Support staff review the Support Needs and the Social Care Team Manager review each Extra Care tenant's needs on a regular basis. This ensures that Support and Care Plans reflect the changing medical needs and aspirations of each individual. Both the Housing and the Social Care teams work closely together to access other health and social care services, along with friends and family, to provide a holistic support network for each tenant.

Facilities available include:

  • health room (e.g. for chiropody service)
  • laundry room
  • hairdressing room
  • lifts
  • assisted bathing facilities
  • communal lounge, dining room and conservatory
  • programme of social activities
  • a courtyard garden containing the Hampton Court Flower Show silver medal winning garden 'Green Haven'.

How do I apply to join the waiting list?

Applicants for the scheme are accepted from people of retirement age (60 plus) living in the borough of Woking.

The selection of tenants is based upon need and takes into consideration the following factors:

  • applicants' present housing
  • medical circumstances
  • financial position
  • access to the Extra Care element of Brockhill depends on an assessment of needs by Woking Social Care team.

Decisions on allocation are taken by a multi-agency panel with representatives from:

  • Woking Borough Council's Housing Services.
  • Social Services.
  • Woking Primary Care Trust.

Applicants should be aware that there is a high demand for the facilities Brockhill provides and the waiting list for a flat can be considerable.
