Woking Borough Council is carrying out an important study of housing within the area as required by recent Government guidance. In partnership with Guildford and Waverley Borough Councils, the aim of the Strategic Housing Market Assessment (SHMA) is to develop a good understanding of how housing markets operate, particularly in terms of need and demand in the community.
The SHMA will also help to ensure that the information underpinning local housing strategies is robust and comprehensive. The assessment will inform the development of policies within the Local Development Framework (LDF) aimed at providing the right mix of housing in the Borough. The SHMA includes an update to the Housing Needs Assessment.
In October 2007, households across Woking were chosen at random to take part in a housing survey that gave the Council up to date information about the housing circumstances and aspirations of local people. This information will be used to help the Council best meet these needs in the coming years.
Along with the housing survey, Stakeholder and Citizens' Panel focus groups were held. The final draft documents are now available for a limited period, via Guildford Borough Council's website, to enable those who attended one of the events to provide final comments.
The final report is due at the end of April 2008.
The Council will continue to keep residents and stakeholders informed as the process progresses.
The data is being collected and analysed on behalf of the Council by Fordham Research. More information about the SHMA can be found on Guildford Borough Council's website or by contacting Woking Borough Council on 01483 755855 or email customers@woking.gov.uk.
