The average baby uses around 4,000 to 6,000 nappies from birth to potty - these weigh about the same as an average family car!
Washable nappies are a great alternative to disposable nappies and they help to reduce our reliance on landfill, as well as potentially saving parents hundreds of pounds.
Washable nappies (also referred to as cotton nappies or reusable nappies) are made from natural materials and can be used more than once. They are available in a wide variety of sizes and styles, and can be sanitised with a hot wash in your washing machine.
Washable nappies consist of mainly two parts:
the nappy
the wrap
Flushable, biodegradable `one-way nappy liners' can be used inside a reusable nappy, allowing the waste to be hygienically flushed down the toilet.
To find out more about washable nappies, the Surrey Real Nappy Network is on hand to offer help and advice about the best options for you and your baby. Advice is free and impartial and offered to parents, parents-to-be, child carers and health professionals.
