Battery recycling

Woking residents can make a positive contribution to the environment by recycling their old household batteries at the Civic Offices in Woking town centre or at either of the Waitrose stores in West Byfleet or Goldsworth Park.

We are pleased to welcome Waitrose's support for this recycling initiative and the hope is their customers will take the opportunity to recycle whilst visiting the stores. Store details and opening times are listed at the bottom of the page.

Red and black bins, in the shape of large batteries, have been installed just inside the main entrance of Civic Offices and at both Waitrose stores. This scheme is part of Woking Borough Council's ongoing strategy to further increase the Borough's recycling rate and help remove these items from landfill.

Each year the average UK household uses 21 batteries, which collectively results in around 30,000 tonnes of waste.

They also contain heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury which leak from the battery as the outer coating corrodes, and these can pollute the environment if not disposed of correctly. If you need to use batteries, then rechargeable batteries should be your first choice.

The new bin will ensure that household batteries are recycled in a way that does not harm the environment. The types of batteries that can be recycled at the Civic Offices include alkaline dry-cell AAA, AA, C and D cell.

Household batteries can also be recycled at one of the County's community recycling centres (The nearest for Woking residents are either Martyrs Lane or Slyfield).

Other types of battery, including car batteries, hearing aid batteries, mobile phone batteries and rechargeable batteries can also be successfully recycled. Unfortunately, you cannot put these in the battery bin at the Civic Offices. For further information please look in our Recycling Directory.
