What can and can't go in my bins?

Your recycling wheeled bin or blue recycling sack

To ensure we can recycle as much as possible, it is important that all residents separate their waste correctly. Only put clean, dry recyclables into your blue-lidded wheeled bin or blue sack. Materials should be put loose into the bin and not contained in any packing or wrapping.

Please ensure any glass is contained within the blue-lidded bin. This may mean removing other items such as cardboard or plastic bottles to make room. Glass not contained within your blue-lidded wheeled bin will not be collected.

Households that use blue recycling sacks are able to recycle glass through kerbside collections. If you have broken glass please place this into a cardboard box e.g. cereal box and label 'broken glass'. This will ensure collection crews take extra care when removing these items.

Please only put the following items into your recycling bin or blue recycling sack:

  • cardboard

  • Aluminium foil - scrunched to the size of a cricket ball
  • glass bottles and jars

  • household paper, such as newspapers, magazines, directories, computer paper, envelopes, catalogues and greetings cards

  • washed tins and cans - including biscuit tins

Extra recyclables are always welcome, so if your recycling container is always full, put your recyclables (excluding glass) in boxes or carrier bags by the side of your bin. Please do not put extra recyclables out in black bags, as it may be confused with general household waste.

Materials such as clothing and drinks cartons may be recyclable but cannot be put inot your recycling bin or sack, these can be taken to one of the recycling bring sites around the Borough.

Your black wheeled bin

Your black wheeled bin is for household waste that cannot be recycled.

To avoid smells and to help keep your black bin clean, please wrap all perishable items before placing them in the bin.

Please do not put the items listed below in your black wheeled bin:

  • Waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE)

  • Hazardous waste such as old paint, chemical cleaners, car batteries. These can be disposed of at Martyrs Lane or Slyfield Community Recycing Centre.

The Council does not collect excess general waste. Any excess should be taken to your local Community Recycling Centre. If you regularly produce excess waste, please contact us and we can arrange for a member of staff to give you guidance on how to recycle more of your waste.
