Food waste digester trial

The new food waste recycling project is now underway…

The Food Waste Digester Trial is now well underway. The units were delivered at the end of April and participants have been diverting their kitchen waste from landfill for three months.

Mr and Mrs WIlliams were one of the first families to begin using their food waste digester.

The trial requires participants to put food waste into a small container in the kitchen and then transfer it to a food waste digester installed in their garden.  This method of food waste disposal removes the environmental impact of collection and transportation and ensures this waste is kept out of landfill.

The units themselves are very easy to use.  The Green Cone takes food waste only and converts it to water and carbon dioxide, with nothing more required than emptying your food waste into it.  The Green Johanna takes food waste and a small amount of garden waste, which it then converts into compost that can be used on flower beds.

The volunteers are recording the amount of food waste they place in the digesters and returning the data to the Council. The results will show the positive impact that a wider adoption of these units by residents could have on recycling levels.

Participants have also recently completed a feedback questionnaire that will provide valuable information regarding the use of each type of unit.

The FWD research project is being managed by Woking Borough Council on behalf of the Surrey authorities.  The funding for the project has been sourced from a jointly managed fund provided by central government to support local authorities in meeting recycling and waste diversion targets.  The findings will be shared across all the Surrey authorities and will appear on the www.surreywaste.info website during the autumn.
