Why are we introducing weekly collections of food waste?

In 2008, we conducted a waste and recycling survey to understand what services you would welcome in the future. You said you would support the introduction of weekly collections of food waste.

Approximately 40% of the Borough's non-recyclable waste is made up of unwanted or left-over food, and when biodegradable waste such as food waste is sent to landfill, it cannot decompose naturally. The lack of oxygen causes the greenhouse gas methane to be released, which is 21 times more harmful than carbon dioxide - a contributing factor in global warming. As a result, all councils have been set limits on the amount of biodegradable waste that can be landfilled.

By introducing weekly food waste collections, we are helping to reduce the amount of methane gas released into the atmosphere and the amount of waste sent to landfill.
