We would like to thank you for attending the Neighbourhood Improvement Workshop held at Horsell Village Hall, Horsell on Monday 14th January 2008.  We hope you will find this update informative.

So, down to business!  The event itself was hailed a success as over 200 residents attended and took the opportunity to meet various voluntary groups, including the residents’ associations. Also on hand to speak to residents and local people were representatives from Surrey Police, Woking borough Council, Surrey County Council, Surrey Fire and Rescue and the Local Primary Care Trust – The main partners behind the Neighbourhood management Group who planned the workshop. As you will remember on the way in, everyone was asked to write down the main three issues that they would like to discuss.  These were then used to determine the three main topics for the evening’s workshops:

  • Improving the Local Environment
  • Road Safety and Highways
  • Young People and Anti Social Behaviour

Since the event Surrey Police, Neighbourhood Officers (from Woking Borough Council), Officers from Surrey County Council, Local Councillors and Local Residents Groups have been investigating how Community Groups, relevant Agencies and the local Residents can get involved in addressing these issues. There were numerous small issues that came up regarding Road Safety and Highways, that Surrey county Council are looking in to.One of these issues were the dangers of cycling on pavements, with a solution of an Education Campaign showing the dangers.

Litter and Street Cleaning - Woking Borough Council are looking to arrange a community clean up day involving the residents of Horsell. We have already started litter education in local schools.

Horticulture - Woking Borough Council have already planted two new trees in QE2 Gardens.Another suggestion that was raised was ‘Guerrilla Gardening’ which is community involvement gardening. One resident raised concerns about a tree stump in Kirby Road, this will be removed shortly.

Footpaths Anti Social Behaviour -To improve relationships with the younger and older generations of Horsell. On the night we had 26 residents who said they would be prepared to become Community Volunteers.  If any one else feels they would like to become a Community Volunteer please contact Woking Borough Council’s Neighbourhood Officer Kate Wilson on kate.wilson@woking.gov.uk.
