La21 meetings and events

The Woking LA21 group organises regular public meetings and events, which usually involve presentations and discussions about topical environmental issues. It provides an opportunity to find out about the facts, and to hear from local and national experts. The events are usually held in locations close to Woking Town Centre and are free to attend.

LA21 AGM 2008: Lo-carb living

The Woking Local Agenda 21 `Lo-carb living' event will take place on Wednesday 4th June 2008, 7:30pm at the HG Wells Conference and Events Centre. This is a great opportunity to hear from those in the know about the national and local solutions to Climate Change. Tony Juniper, Director of Friends of the Earth will talk about a range of high profile campaigns that have influenced environmental thinking. Ray Morgan OBE, Woking Borough Council's Chief Executive, will introduce the Council's Climate Change Strategy, and present the Borough's response to the global issue of Climate Change. Keen to be Green: Living and the built environment

Autumn 2007 saw Woking Borough Council and Woking Local Agenda 21 (LA21) supporting the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Surrey Centre at a public event in Woking town centre. The purpose of the event was to stimulate interest in environmentally friendly solutions, particularly within the home - focusing on construction practices, the way we live and our built environment. There were exhibition stands from CIOB, Woking Borough Council, LA21, Energy Centre for Sustainable Communities, Surrey Waste Management and a range of trade organisations specialising in renewable energy, sustainable refurbishments, and environmentally friendly buildings and construction.

Predicting The Future of Climate Change
LA21's AGM for 2006 featured an update from the Met Office's Hadley Centre, which specialises in Climate Change Prediction.  The event featured a detailed presentation and question and answer session, focusing on Climate Change modelling.

Extreme Weather - Featuring Droughts and Floods

Held in October 2004, this event provided an insight into the water management issues facing the Woking Borough, and potential problems resulting from droughts and floods.

Skyglow: The Phantom Menace?

A meeting held in April 2004 to investigate the wide ranging impacts of light pollution. It featured speakers from the Campaign to Protect Rural England and the Institute of Lighting Engineers.

The Great GM Debate.

An event that tied in with the National GM Public Debate in 2003. Included a panel of speakers campaigning both for and against Genetically Modified crops.

Has Spring Already Sprung? Discover Nature's Response to Climate Change.

The UK Phenology Network provided an insight into the impacts and knock on effects that a changing climate will have on nature.

Climate Change: An Update.

This evening marked the launch of Woking Green Pages, and also highlighted the changing climate that present generations are likely to experience, and the implications of this.
