Support networks

A number of voluntary organisations and Woking Borough Council provide a range of support services and social facilities to meet the needs of the community. These include:

  • Centres for the community and 'drop-in' centres.
  • The Woking Careline emergency alarm system.
  • Home support, sheltered housing and luncheon clubs.
  • Over 60's clubs.
  • Community Meals.
  • Woking Community Transport (Dial-a-Ride, Dial-a-Bus) and concessionary bus fares.

Age Concern Woking is a befriending service for older people.  Age Concern can arrange home fire risk checks in partnership with Surrey Fire and Rescue Service.

Age Concern Surrey
provides help with rights and entitlements (e.g. housing, benefits). Age Concern has 40 fact sheets on different topics, brochures and contacts with hundreds of other organisations. It offers support and counselling services. There are also many opportunities for you to get involved with volunteering to strengthen your local community. Age Concern Surrey has an information centre in Woking see contacts below - and a computer drop-in centre in Haydon Place (just off North Street) in Guildford, to help you to make use of email and the world wide web.

Help the Aged provides services and advice on issues such as home safety, retirement and mobility. It runs a transport scheme which can help voluntary groups and also offers small grants to local groups. The organisation also produces range of leaflets giving helpful advice on issues affecting older people; 'Helping you to help yourself " thinking about money' is a free booklet about how to assess your present financial situation and prepare a balanced personal budget.

Centres for the Community

The Borough runs or supports six community centres offering local residents services and facilities, refreshments, social events, activities, health-related services and halls and rooms for hire.

Home support services

  • Careline is a means of summoning help at the touch of a button any time of the day or night. Equipment easily installed in your home enables you to call for assistance 24 hours a day in times of emergency, ill health or if you need advice.
  • Homelink is a home improvement agency service providing support and assistance with maintenance improvements and adaptations to the home. It provides free advice and handyman service.
  • Sheltered and supported housing offers staff support to tenants and the facility to call for help in an emergency through an alarm system. Minor adaptations can be provided for elderly and disabled people in Council homes.
