Homophobic harassment

Homophobia is the irrational fear of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Homophobic incidents are believed to be greatly under-reported and can also be directed at people who are perceived to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

It has been recognised that there is a need to encourage the reporting of such incidents, as well as providing support for people who have been affected by homophobic harassment.

Homophobic harassment can include such things as verbal abuse, taunts, graffiti and even serious physical assaults. Such an incident is often referred to as a hate crime.

Such incidents should be reported to the police who have a dedicated `vulnerable persons officer' whose role it is to deal with victims of homophobic incidents. Phone 0845 125 2222 to report incidents to the police and ask to speak to the Vulnerable Persons Officer for advice and support.

Homophobic harassment can be reported to West Surrey Health Promotion Outreach Team 01932 355533 or Gay Surrey 07971 277609 (advice and support will also be available).
