Play Development

Woking Borough Council value children and young peoples place in society as well as providing a variety of play opportunities and services.  A Children's Activities Development Officer is employed to oversee play and develop this across the Borough.

This involves benchmarking play locally and countywide, supporting local providers of play, sharing information about local and national play initiatives and news, and feeding those initiatives into the play services we provide (such as Woking Leisure Centre Daycamps, the summer Playschemes and Play Areas).

Woking Borough Council adopted a Boroughwide ‘Play Strategy’ in 2007 designed to identify gaps in provision and provide a strategic framework for play in Woking Borough.  This Play Strategy can be viewed here.

Woking Borough Council is also a member of Play England and as such is signed up to the ‘Charter for Children’s Play’.  We endeavour to ensure that all of the principles listed in this charter are met on our schemes and would encourage other play organisations and settings to do so also.  Individuals and organisations can become a member of Play England and there are many benefits to this.

In August 2008 National Play Day was recognised in Woking with an event aimed at raising awareness about the necessity for children to experience risk in their play.  The following BBC Southern Counties radio interview with the Children's Activities Development Officer describes this in more detail.
