Benefit fraud

We’re committed to protecting public funds and making sure that only those people entitled to Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support receive payments.

If you do not declare, within a calendar month, changes in your circumstances or if you knowingly provide false or incomplete information, you may be prosecuted by either us, Woking Borough Council, or the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Examples of fraud

  • deliberately failing to declare all your income or savings
  • claiming as a single person or lone parent when your partner lives with you
  • creating a fictitious landlord and claiming Housing Benefit on a property you own yourself
  • making a completely false claim where the person claiming does not exist.

If you think someone is committing benefit fraud you can report it online to the DWP or call the National Benefit Fraud Helpline on 0800 854 440.
